Same canvas, same poles, same 9-bolt hinge as the XL — for $142 less. The difference is 4 arms vs 6 and packed footprint. For Hilux, Ranger and most mid-size 4WDs, the standard 270° covers the camp perfectly.
Same engineering as the XL — for $142 less
320GSM blackout ripstop canvas. 9-bolt hinge. Welded arm joints. Three telescopic support poles in the box. Pre-sewn tensioning straps. The only differences between the standard 270° and the XL are arm count (4 vs 6) and coverage span. For Hilux, Ranger, and most mid-size 4WDs, four arms covers the camp properly. If you're on a larger rig — LandCruiser, Patrol, Prado — the XL's extra two arms fill the gap that matters.

What's actually different
01
The #1 fix
3× Telescopic Support Poles — In the Box, Not Optional
Canvas sagging and pooling water is the #1 complaint about 270° awnings in Australia. It's always a poles problem. Without poles the canvas hangs flat — rain collects in the middle and dumps on camp when someone brushes the edge. With poles creating a slight pitch, rain sheds off the sides. Other brands charge $80–120 extra for support poles and most buyers skip them. We include them. Use them every setup. The problem stops existing.
02
Wind
Pre-Sewn Tensioning Straps — Not an Afterthought
Pull the canvas taut, clip the straps. 30 seconds. Coastal gusts, Kimberley afternoon storms — the canvas doesn't move. Stitched in at the factory. The awning that flaps is the one without pre-sewn tensioning. This one has them.
03
Corrugation-rated
Welded Arm Joints — Rivets Work Loose. Welds Don't.
Riveted joints are the standard. They fatigue under multi-directional vibration on corrugated dirt roads. Every Australian who's run the Gibb or Oodnadatta has heard the rattle. Our joints are welded at the backplate — continuous steel, not a pin through a hole. 10,000km of corrugations later, the arms are still solid and silent.
04
Hinge
9-Bolt Patented Hinge — More Clamping Force, Longer Life
The hinge carries the full arm and canvas load through every corrugation. Standard market hinge is 6 bolts. Nine bolts distributes stress across more contact points — less load per bolt, significantly longer hinge life. Patented design. Shows up at year two and three of hard touring, not on day one.
05
Camp lighting
LED on Every Arm — Amber + White, Dimmable
Four arms, LED on each. Amber for camp atmosphere and night vision. White for cooking and gear. Whole camp is lit across the full arc. USB-powered, pre-wired at factory. No extension leads, no lantern on a hook, no dark corners.
06
Top End heat
320GSM Blackout Ripstop — Heavier Than Market Standard
320GSM hexagon ripstop poly-cotton. Blackout underside cuts radiant heat significantly. Noticeably cooler in QLD or NT midday compared to a standard canvas awning. Ripstop weave resists tearing on branches or bad guy-line tension. Same spec as the XL.
Which variant do you need?
| Variant | Best for |
|---|---|
| Passenger LHS With RTT Access Hole RTT owners |
The canvas opening aligns with your rooftop tent entrance. Move from tent to awning space without climbing down — invaluable at 6am in rain or cold. If you have a rooftop tent, this is the one. |
| Driver RHS Dual-awning builds |
Shade on the driver's side. No RTT access hole on the RHS. Popular paired with a 180° passenger awning for full vehicle perimeter coverage. |
Standing behind your vehicle looking forward — LHS (passenger) is left, RHS (driver) is right. Not sure? Email us your setup and we'll confirm.

Mounting — What's Involved
1
Confirm side, variant and rack compatibility
LHS (passenger) or RHS (driver). RTT access hole only on the LHS variant. Mounts to any rack with a T-slot or track system. Height-adjustable brackets clear most RTT profiles. Email your vehicle and rack if unsure.
2
Mount the hinge bracket — two people, ~30 minutes
9-bolt hinge bracket clamps to your rack rail. No drilling, no permanent modification. 10mm ratchet and torque wrench at 35Nm. Two people for initial lift — awning is ~30kg.
3
First open — arms out, poles up, straps clipped
Swing four arms out from the hinge. Deploy all 3 support poles every time — this creates the pitch that sheds rain. Clip tensioning straps. Full setup under 5 minutes once you've done it twice.
4
LED — USB powered, pre-wired, done
Connect to any USB power bank or vehicle USB port. Pre-wired at factory — no extra runs needed. Amber on for camp, white on for cooking. Both dimmable.
Questions We Actually Get
Standard 270° or XL — which is right for me?
Hilux, Ranger, mid-size 4WDs: standard 270°. Four arms covers the camp properly on these vehicles and you save $142. LandCruiser 70/79, Patrol GU/Y62, Prado, larger wagons: consider the XL. The extra two arms fill the coverage gap that shows up on a longer wheelbase. Same canvas, poles, hinge and hardware on both.
Do I really need the support poles every time?
Yes — in any wind or rain. In still, calm weather you can skip them, but that's not Australian camping. Five minutes at setup and you never think about pooling or flapping again. The poles are in the box. Use them every time.
Why welded joints instead of riveted?
Rivets are designed for shear load from one direction. Corrugated dirt roads create rapid multi-directional vibration — rivets fatigue and work loose. Welds are continuous steel at the joint — they don't loosen under vibration. You'll notice riveted awning arms rattle on road. Welded joints are silent and stay solid after years of hard use.
LHS or RHS — how do I know which side?
Standing behind your vehicle looking forward — LHS (passenger) is left, RHS (driver) is right. Most Australian setups use LHS passenger — it shades the rear camp area and is where the RTT access hole sits. RHS suits specific setups or dual-awning builds.
Will it fit with a rooftop tent already mounted?
Yes — height-adjustable brackets clear most RTT profiles. If you have the LHS variant with RTT access hole, the opening aligns with the tent entrance. Email your specific RTT and rack combo and we'll confirm clearance before ordering.
