The honest case for this tent
70mm foam. Anti-con mat. Anderson pre-wired. USB panel. Portable fan.
All in the box. From $2,499.
Kings ships 50mm foam, no anti-con mat, no solar wiring — from $1,200. Darche Ridgeback ships 60mm, no anti-con mat — from $2,800. We ship 70mm, include the mat, pre-wire the Anderson, and back it from NSW for 24 months — from $2,499. No upsells to make the tent liveable on night one.

What's actually different
01
The #1 regret buy
Anti-Condensation Mat — In the Box, Not a $70 Add-On
A 12mm breathable mesh mat creates an air gap between the foam and the aluminium base. Your body heat escapes instead of condensing against the shell and soaking into the mattress overnight. Waking up cold and damp in an RTT traces back to one thing in almost every case — no anti-con mat. That problem is solved before you unpack. Kings sells it separately. Darche sells it separately. It's in this box.
02
Sleep quality
70mm HD Memory Foam — Recovers Every Morning
Budget RTTs ship 50mm flat foam. After a 10-hour corrugated dirt day, 50mm bottoms out. 70mm HD memory foam doesn't — it recovers overnight so you wake up ready to do it again, not stiff and wrecked. No topper, no compromise. Kings is 50mm. Darche Ridgeback is 60mm. This is 70mm.
03
Corrugation-rated hardware
304 Marine Stainless Nyloc Hardware — Won't Rattle Loose
Standard RTT bolts rattle loose on corrugated dirt roads. It's one of the most common complaints in Australian 4WD forums — owners re-torquing bolts every trip. Every fastener on this tent is Nyloc-rated — vibration locks the thread, not loosens it. The aluminium composite shell has matte powder coat. The canvas is 420GSM blackout poly-cotton at 3000mm waterproof. Built for the Gibb and the Oodnadatta, not a weekend at the Grampians.
04
Morning game-changer
60-Second Setup — Doona and Pillows Stay Inside
Gas-assisted struts pop the lid. Unfold the ladder. Clip it. Done. Internal clearance is designed to close with your bedding inside — drive away in the morning with your bed already made. No wrestling pillows into stuff sacks at 5:30am. No wet compressed sleeping bags. Just pack and go.
05
North Australia ready
Cross-Flow Mesh Ventilation — Properly Insect Screened
Above-entry mesh vent plus opposing cross-flow vents on both sides. Genuine airflow, zero bugs. Running QLD, NT or Kimberley in summer — this is the difference between sleeping and lying awake sweating at 35°C at midnight. Not standard at this price in any other range we've found.
06
Camp power done
Anderson Pre-Wired + USB Panel — No Extra Wiring Runs
Dual LED — warm amber for camp, bright white for reading, both dimmable. Anderson plug is factory-wired for direct solar connection. USB-A, USB-C and 12V socket built into the panel. Charge your phone, run a fan, plug in a 250W solar panel — no runs to make, no cable management from scratch. Every other tent at this price makes you do this yourself.
07
Fuel economy
38kg — Lighter Than Most Comparable Hard Shells
Hard shell RTTs cop a lot about fuel economy. Weight is the lever. At 38kg this tent is lighter than the Darche Panorama 2 (42kg) and significantly lighter than iKamper options (55kg+). Less weight on the roof means less drag, better fuel economy on highway runs, and less stress on your dynamic roof load rating. The aerodynamic hard shell profile also outperforms soft shell at highway speeds.
The real cost of going cheaper

Kings at ~$1,200 + $70 anti-con mat + $60 foam topper + $90 Anderson wiring kit = $1,420 — and you still have 50mm foam, standard bolts, and a 12-month warranty. This tent ships with all of it done, 70mm foam, Nyloc hardware, and 24 months from NSW — from $2,499. The gap is smaller than it looks.

1.3 Compact suits factory crossbars at 1350mm spread or under. 1.4 Standard suits aftermarket rack setups at 1400–1550mm. Not sure? Email your vehicle make/model, rack brand and crossbar spread — we confirm before you order. One message, done. We'd rather spend two minutes on that than have you return a tent.

Mounting — What's Involved
1
Measure your crossbar spread
Centre-to-centre on your existing rack bars. 1.3 Compact: under 1350mm. 1.4 Standard: 1400–1550mm. If you're borderline, email us before ordering — one message confirmed.
2
Mount to your rack bars — two people, ~45 minutes
Supplied T-slot clamps bolt directly to most aftermarket rack systems including Rhino-Rack, Thule and ARB bars. Round and square bar adaptors included. Two people recommended — tent is ~38kg. You'll need a 10mm ratchet and a torque wrench (35Nm on mount bolts). No drilling, no permanent modification.
3
Solar connection — 5 minutes, no wiring
Anderson plug is already wired inside the tent. Route your panel cable through the tent's cable port and clip the Anderson in. No splicing, no additional wiring, no electrician. A 250W panel connects directly.
4
First open — under 60 seconds
Unclip the two latches. Gas struts do the lifting. Unfold and lock the ladder. Bedding is inside from factory. You're set up. Pack down the same way — close, pillows and doona stay in, latch, drive.

Questions We Actually Get
Does the bedding actually fit inside when packed?
Yes — internal clearance is specifically engineered for this. Close the lid with the doona and pillows inside. Pack down in under 60 seconds. Drive away. No stuff sacks, no compression.
Why does the condensation mat matter so much?
Without it, your body heat condenses against the aluminium shell and wicks into the foam base overnight. You wake up cold and damp even in mild weather — this is the most common RTT complaint across every Australian forum and review site. The mat creates an air gap so moisture escapes rather than absorbing. It's a ventilation solution, not a comfort accessory. Kings charges $70 for it. Darche charges $80. It's in this box.
Will the bolts rattle loose on corrugations?
No. Every fastener is Nyloc — the thread locks under vibration rather than loosening. Standard RTT hardware is the #2 complaint from serious Australian tourers who run the Gibb, Oodnadatta or Cape York regularly. Nyloc hardware is spec'd for exactly this. Check your torque on the mount bolts at 35Nm before each long trip as standard practice.
What's the actual fuel economy impact?
Hard shell RTTs are more aerodynamic than soft shells at highway speeds — less drag, meaningfully better fuel economy on long runs. At 38kg this tent is lighter than the Darche Panorama (42kg) and well under iKamper options (55kg+). Lighter weight also means less stress on your dynamic roof load rating — the number that matters while driving, not while parked.
Can I connect solar directly?
Yes — Anderson plug is pre-wired at the factory. Route your panel cable through the cable port, clip the Anderson in, done. A 250W solar panel kit connects directly. No additional wiring runs, no electrician.
How does residential delivery work?
RTTs ship as oversized freight. Commercial address with forklift access is standard. Residential delivery is available in most areas — contact us first. Surcharge applies sometimes, not always, depends on your location and access.
Is this the same tent as a cheaper brand?
Some hard-shell RTTs at this price point share manufacturing lines. The difference is the spec decisions the brand makes: foam thickness, what's included, hardware grade, canvas weight, and who backs the warranty. We chose 70mm foam, included the anti-con mat, pre-wired the Anderson, used Nyloc hardware, and back it from NSW for 24 months. Most brands at this price didn't.
1.3 vs 1.4 — I'm still not sure
Email your vehicle make/model, rack brand and crossbar spread measurement. We confirm the right size before you order — one message, done. We'd rather spend two minutes on that than have you mount the wrong size.
